Austrian GP History: From Airfield Beginnings to World Stage

The journey began in 1963, when the first Austrian Grand Prix was held at Zeltweg Airfield, a flat and abrasive military airbase. Though it wasn’t part of the official championship that year, it marked the start of Austria’s love affair with Formula 1. In 1964, the race was added to the Formula One World Championship, with Ferrari’s Lorenzo Bandini taking the checkered flag.

However, the rough and narrow airfield surface proved unsuitable for the sport’s growing demands. The race was dropped from the calendar after just one official championship outing.

Österreichring Era: Speed and Elevation

In 1970, the race found a new home at the Österreichring, located near Spielberg. This purpose-built track was a revelation—fast, flowing, and blessed with natural elevation changes, it quickly earned a reputation as one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar.

The Österreichring hosted the Austrian GP from 1970 to 1987, delivering memorable battles and thrilling finishes. Yet, as safety standards evolved, the circuit’s high-speed layout became a concern, leading to its removal from the F1 schedule.

Return of the Grand Prix: The A1-Ring Chapter

After a 10-year hiatus, the Grand Prix made a comeback in 1997 at the revamped and shortened A1-Ring, built on the bones of the old Österreichring. Although tamer in design, the new circuit brought exciting new names to the winners’ list, including Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Häkkinen, and the legendary Michael Schumacher.

The A1-Ring era lasted until 2003, after which Austria again disappeared from the F1 calendar—this time for over a decade.

A New Era at the Red Bull Ring

In 2014, Formula 1 returned to the hills of Styria with the opening of the Red Bull Ring, a modernized version of the old circuit. Tucked away in the picturesque Austrian countryside, this 4.31 km track quickly became known for its mix of tight corners and long straights, offering both strategic challenges and frequent on-track battles.

Since its return, the Red Bull Ring has hosted unforgettable races, with winners like Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen, who has made the track one of his strongholds. The circuit’s short length and elevation changes continue to produce tight racing, and the beautiful mountainous backdrop makes it a visual feast for fans and TV viewers alike.
